(Mainichi/Yuki Kurisu) FUKUOKA -- Police recently thanked a bank branch in this southwestern Japan city's Higashi Ward for preventing five phone scams targeting elderly people since May 2021. Fukuoka Prefectural Police's community safety department and the Higashi Police Station on Sept. 19 presented letters of appreciation to the Nishi-Nippon City Bank's Wajiro branch and its counter service division chief, 43-year-old Yukari Saeki. In the latest attempted fraud case in August this year, a man in his 80s said on a visit to the branch, "I want to cancel my fixed-term deposit for house reform and take home 3 million yen (about $21,000) in cash." The branch has always taken caution over the high possibility of fraud when customers say they want to take home a large sum of cash, and a bank staffer called Higashi Police Station. When an officer from Wajiro Police Box interviewed the elderly man in detail, it became clear that the customer had received a phone call from a man claiming to be his son who said he needed 3 million yen to settle a workplace dispute. Saeki commented, "I'm glad that we were able to prevent harm by working together." The Nishi-Nippon City Bank's Wajiro branch counter service division chief Yukari Saeki, right
