To submit a haiku, please use the form at the following address: https://mainichi.jp/english/contact/haiku/ Q: How many haiku I can submit? Is there a limit? A: There is currently no limit on how many haiku readers may submit. Q: Do you publish all haiku submissions? A: No, the poems we receive from readers through the submission form are forwarded to our haiku selector who chooses one to be uploaded each day. Q: If my haiku is accepted for publication, when will it be published? A: If a haiku submission is selected for publication it will usually appear the following month or the month after. Q: How long do you keep unpublished haiku before discarding them? A: The haiku we receive through the submission form above are usually held in reserve for up to about three months before being selected for publication or discarded. However, there are times when some haiku might be kept for up to about 10 months due to a seasonal element that prevents it from being published earlier. Q: Will I be notified if my haiku is accepted? A: No, readers are not notified when their haiku are selected before publication on our website. To check which have been selected for publication, please view the haiku in the Mainichi's Haiku in English section at https://mainichi.jp/english/haiku/ Q: I'm a beginner. Can I still submit haiku and do you offer any guides for aspiring authors? A: Yes, we welcome submissions from all readers. To help people get started we have published an article giving an overview of haiku with some common season words (kigo) at the following link: https://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20210531/p2a/00m/0su/032000c Q: Does my haiku have to be in 5-7-5 syllable format and are there any other formatting rules? A: No, while brevity is desirable, haiku in English are not restricted to a specific number of syllables and authors are also free to use their preferred capitalization styles. As a general rule, each haiku should consist of three lines. (One- or two-line haiku may be accepted in rare circumstances.) Q: Can I submit haiku that have already been published elsewhere? A: No, your haiku should be new and previously unpublished. Q: Can I submit English translations of haiku in foreign languages appearing on other sites? A: No, haiku submitted to The Mainichi must be previously unpublished in any language, so translations of haiku that have already been carried elsewhere should not be submitted to The Mainichi.
